A Poem With Zest
by Thereza Dos Santos
If I tell you the facts,
a bit about me.
Will you guess what I am?
It’s easy, you’ll see.
I’ll start with a hint.
I come from a tree.
From India to Brazil,
and Spain to Mexico,
from USA to China,
where the heat helps me grow.
I’m not purple or green,
and with time I turn black.
I’m not sent with your lunch,
or eaten for snack.
Some say I’m sour
and they scrunch their face.
But I’m bursting with flavour,
and don’t take up much space.
You can…
Squeeze me, slice me,
and toss me in a drink.
Add me to pies and tarts,
and clean your kitchen sink.
I’m not crunchy or sweet.
My skin is called zest.
I’m the most versatile fruit,
some say, the best.
Have you guessed yet?
I am pulpy and juicy.
Add me to hair and to weeds.
Serve my wedges on a plate,
but disregard the seeds.
So, I gave you the facts,
a lot about me.
But one thing I missed,
is my vitamin C.
Did you guess?
I am yellow and round
And come from a tree
I am the faithful lemon,
from the citrus family.
