My First Personal Essay

(The Portugal News, June 8, 2024)

My first personal essay, This Writing Activity is Not Just for Kids, was published in The Portugal News, both in print and online. The timing was perfect considering June is Portuguese Heritage Month.

On the outset, the essay is about doing a writing activity with your kids, but it also touches on what you can learn about them in the process, and includes a call to encourage Luso-kids to write; although we are many, there are few Luso-North American writers in traditional children’s publishing.

This publication pleased me to no end and luckily, my sister was in Portugal and was able to bring home a print copy.

July 24, 2025 Update:

I have been reading the Portugal Resident newspaper for many years on my trips to the Algarve. It is a fantastic English language publication that has been around for 30 years. Thank you, Portugal Resident, for including my essay today, along with the photos of me and my daughter!
